This was taken whilst I was watching a Short-eared Owl hunting for mice for vole. The SEO thought he was being clever by hiding his kill in small holes and under tuffs of grass. Presumably so he could come back later when he was hungry.

Well the local pair of magpies definately had this owl sorted lol. The owl would hide the kill and the magpies were there the moment the owl flew off to hunt. Fascinating to watch

It's wings are pretty awesome, if you ignore the dead mouse!

I kinda agree. I've been trying for ages to get a reasonable magpie shot with the blue showing in the wing but have failed. Now I finally get one and there is a mouse in the shot lol

Heheheh! I love the way the feathers almost become finger-like towards the tip though. The mouse, though a little morbid, does kind of bring home the force of nature!

Nothing better than a clever magpie! Love the iridescence of his wings - these look like the ones I saw in Colorado.

Remarkable....your 'magpies' are nothing like our 'magpies'...but that wasn't what I wanted to say...I've always been intrigued by the 'hiding for later' idea as I don't imagine it works to well....I have a raven who visits now and again for a free feed and I've seen her tuck away a piece of food under a few leaves 'for later' a couple of times now....wonder what her memory's like :XD:

Your magpies are so beautiful. We have nice looking magpie birds in Australia but not as pretty as this.

I'm just a figment of your imagination, embrace the hillucination

Now that really is a great capture. Magpies constantly amaze me with their intelligence. Poor old Owls, they have a rep for being wise but as much as I love em I've never seen it demonstrated :D

Impressive!! I didn't know magpies ate meat...
