This was a bitch to get and I haven't even really started with this idea yet lol

I had to clean the splashes off the glass after every frame, what a pain. Almost certainly gonna be scrapped once I get the technique sorted out but I thought it was worth uploading as very few people photograph a water droplet below the water line.

Technique:
buy a small fish tank, this one is 24" wide x 15" high x 15" length. I've modded mine with a plate of optically flat glass to minimise any distortion but it isn't really necessary.

Half fill the tank with water and set the camera up level with the water line.

Flashguns are on the left and right hand sides, set in manual mode and 1/8 full power and the Canon 1D MkII N camera was set in manual at 1/250sec@f22 iso 100 raw. A Canon 100mm macro lens was used to take the pic. A digital timer is used to time the shot down to the millisecond so there is a lot less hit and miss attempts. I know that with a 254 milliseconds delay I can repeat this image time after time if I wanted too.

From this shot I can see I need to black out all of the internal tank surfaces to control the reflections and then introduce some my own reflective strips to provide the highlights that help with the profile of the droplet.

I like it, but I think it would be even better with a lighter background. I thought the part under the water was actually a reflection of your lense at first :).

it's the floor and sides of the tank :) I've blacked out the front of the tank with black velvet to avoid reflections, looks like I will need to do the same on the inside of the tank for the bottom and sides as well

This is really interesting! Many people do splashes (and I love splashes) but I haven't seen a photo of a splash from underwater before! I'm really looking forward to see more of that! :D

Will you end up with enough light to actually see the subject
:iconkevlewis:
should be plenty :) once Ive blacked out the tank I will be able to re-add my own reflections with strips of material to provide highlights

Is weird how the only way to see it is through the reflections. There is something that looks like a person at the right of the subaqua drop, is that you if yes why are you wearing a mask? If no i'm seeing things :p

I think that's the control box from the digital delay system I built lol I really do need to get control of the reflections!
